Welcome to Willowbank School’s ‘Right Start’ preschool programme.
The aim of our programme is to help children with the transition into the primary school setting through the development of early literacy, numeracy and foundation skills.

Each week your child will participate in a variety of structured activities to develop these important skills for learning.

Our goals for the programme are:
· To be able to identify sounds and rhyming patterns
· To be able to count, sequence and identify numbers
· To gain an understanding of shapes and patterning
· To work effectively as part of a group
· To develop our fine and gross motor skills
· To develop our spatial, visual and auditory awareness
· To become familiar with school routines and expectations

Thinking skills and the Key Competencies (Relating to Others, Thinking, Managing Self, Participating & Contributing and Using Language, Symbols and Text) are integrated and woven throughout our sessions

Each week your child will bring home a scrapbook with information on the session’s learning. Also included will be some home learning for you to work on with your child. This will consist of a simple poem, early literacy/numeracy game and a follow up activity from the day’s learning. Each session will be planned to meet the needs of your child and their development.

You can find a little more information about foundation skills and their value on this website: http://www.getreadyforschool.co.nz/ (the video is my favourite part)
